Project 5: Jimi Hendrix One-Liner (do-over on the reflection questions)

The finished piece. For process pictures, see my original post with the photos.

I Develop my Craft

For this project, I used oil pastel, which isn't something I had done before, and I freehand drew a sketch before that. It was nervewracking for me because I have previously struggled with proportions, especially drawing faces, plus once I had put the oil pastel down on the paper, it was there, and it wasn't going anywhere. Several times, I made mistakes that I had to learn how to fix without erasing it or something. Another technique I worked on was adding purple pencil and oil pastel on top of the white oil pastel. I did too much of it, but I feel like it made my project successful because it helped to bring out his personality and make him a little more vivid, not so ghostly.

I Reflect

As I was creating my artwork the coloration was working really well because it was unusual but vivid, and I especially liked how his scarf escaped the circle. As I was creating my artwork, the sheer amount of drawing needed to be revised because it distracted from the ethereal feeling I was going for. I asked my tablemates for feedback while working on adding more to everything, and they pointed out to me that it was ok to leave it without adding more purple to everything, because it was already good and it didn't need more, plus it was supposed to be a one-liner anyway.

I Take Risks

I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone by using oil pastels for the first time, white on black paper no less. I learned from my mistakes that oil pastel blends together a little too well sometimes, and you have to plan for that, and also that one-liners aren't about details and I needed to calm down :) I think this project helped me to grow a lot.
